With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Human Resources, Akiya worked several years as an HR coordinator for Lockheed Martin. She then decided to substitute teach until she found her real passion. Ironically, her real passion turned out to be in Education!
Akiya taught 9th grade Geography, 10th grade World History, 11th grade U.S. History Honors, 12th grade Psychology, AP Psychology, as well as AVIDs I-IV at Dr. Phillips High School.
Diagnosed with cancer in December of 2010, Akiya went through 9 months of chemotherapy. It was during this time, she decided to take her dreams off the back burner, and get to work on a passion project. Music to Mastery was born!
Akiya knew engagement and enthusiasm contributed to a student's success. So, she created Music to Mastery, a Geography resource to help her students learn the 50 states of America, and nearly 200 nations of the world through 11 short songs. An Activity Workbook and Music CD are helping elementary school students learn Geography in a fun way.
After teaching for 10 years, Akiya decided to venture outside of the classroom. She became a Dean for SunRidge Middle School for 3 years, an Assistant Principal for Bridgewater Middle School for 1 year, and currently an Assistant Principal at SunRidge Elementary School in her 3rd year.
Akiya continued to see recurring challenges flow through her office as a middle school administrator. She decided to write a book, The Wonder Years of Middle School, to help address those areas of concern she observed among students and their parents. Each chapter begins with Akiya recounting a few stories during her adolescent years, followed by tips for present middle school students, and then tips for parents/guardians on what to expect and what to do while in middle school.
